Re: Bill 120
Dear Premier Dexter,
It has been brought to my attention that the Nova Scotia government has introduced a Bill in legislature to empower the NSLC to directly obtain an injunction against someone in violation of the Liquor Control Act. After reviewing the proposed Bill 120 it is my understanding that the NSLC would apply to a Supreme Court of Nova Scotia judge directly if there is reason to believe a person or business is likely to, or is continuing to commit a violation of liquor legislation or regulations.
I send this letter in response to this proposed bill and wish to make it clear that I am opposed to this Bill on many levels. This proposed Bill seems to have numerous ulterior motives well outside the parameters of public safety. The Bill is thinly disguised as a Public Health & Safety concern and seems more designed to bypass due process and allows the NSLC, a crown corporate retailer, to impose their will and interfere in any business they deem a competitor.
As a Nova Scotian consumer, I request the opportunity to be afforded the same services and privileges as consumers in other provinces. If passed, this Bill would jeopardize these services and privileges. In a democratic society deeming a business or person guilty until proven innocent is simply not acceptable.
Regards
